I started reading the daily broadsheet newspaper when I was in grade 3. I'm not sure I understood what I was reading, but I remember talking about the 1997 federal election in Canada with a classmate that year! Actually, I started watching the TV news in grade 1. As elementary went on, I started reading almost all the articles and all the sections of the newspaper. I suppose that is what drove my interest in politics and journalism!

I started when I was about 12 years old. Up until then, I would scan the headlines, and head for the sports page and the Funnies. I commute to New York City and have a long ride going and coming home so the newspaper not only informs me of what is going on in the world, but it makes the ride shorter.

Reading the paper nowadays makes my blood pressure rocket sky high. Especially when I read that the Taliban somewhere in Pakistan was forbidden women and girls from flying kites and playing chess! And threatening barbers from cutting beards! These are totally ridicules creatures. Note, not animals, animals are superior in intelligence then the Taliban and Al-Quida, I mean these are creatures of unknown origin.

Hmmmm about 1961 (I was 15) for SERIOUS reading. I 'read' the comics before I could really read and was so excited when I could actually read to my little sister from the comics.

I was very young...I remember sitting on Mom's lap & she would help me with the funnies. I also remember her teaching me to write my name in the margins of the newspaper.
