If you mean a true subwoofer (not a base woofer) as in a home theatre system, most require an audio input and a power source as they often have their own amplifiers built into them. Driving frequencies of, say, 30 to 500 Hz requires a lot of power, which is why most have their own amps. The audio input is typically a single wire/plug from the decoding amplifier. It will have the output jack clearly marked 'subwoofer'.

most receivers have a sub-woofer jack pre-fabbed on the back. Otherwise, there will be a single RCA type jack labeled "line out" this will function also function as a sub-woofer out as long as your sub-woofer is made with a low frequency cross-over installed. Good Luck!!!

Adding to what has already been posted I would like to point out there also exists a variety of active, self-powered subwoofers, which possess some advantages over passive subwoofers driven by external amplifiers. Self-powered subwoofers don't get much easier for a person to use. In my opinion powered subwoofers are well worth any potential customer's consideration.
One other option that is popular in the home theater market is DIY subwoofers and subwoofer kits, which run the gamut in terms of price and complexity.

You need a reciever. You will also need speaker wire to hook it up with, unless the back of the box takes a rca jack. Then you would need an rca jack to hook it up.
