hooking up?

you need to connect your speakers to the back of the receiver, which is probably 5.1.

your right, left, and center, and surround left, and surround right will need to physically connect the wire to the appropriately labeled terminals on the back of the rec. The subwoofer, use an RCA cable from the sub pre-out.

then you will be covered as far as sound output. if you need help with connected sources i suggest you resubmit and be more specific.

Unless you have a receiver that came as a Home Theatre In A Box, or one that specifies that it is for surround sound, then it will just be stereo with digital dolby.

You will only get Dolby 5.1 surround from a digital audio input (optical or coaxial), which must come from your source (DVD player, cable box, etc.).
