Wow, that's 2 totally different vehicles in everyway. I personally would avoid VW's mainly because their reliability is Kia like and rates towards the bottom by JDPower.com research surveys.
Although there are many other vehicles that have AWD, and are sedans like the Ford 500, Freestyle, Volvo S40, S60, etc which the system only engages when the drive wheels detect slippage. Couple that with stability control system and it's more than enough for 90% of the peoples needs.
A serious 4WD system like Jeeps Quadra-trac, or Fords Control-Trac is mainly if your in areas with poor terrain, holes, going thru creeks, etc. But of course, you have the penalty of the added weight which in turn gives you lower fuel mileage.

Bug. You will save sooo much on gas. Also on insurance, registration--plus I believe a bug retains its value better.
Plus being a new driver a smaller car is easier than a big one. I started on a small car, got a SUV, and now am back to a small car.

I don't know what is best for you, but I can tell you that I LOVE my Grand Cherokee. I love it because it does absolutely everything I want it to do. It pulls my travel trailer to Mexico. Its off-road ability takes me where ever I want to go. It has gotten me through hurricanes and blizzards without complaining. It has done all of this with out ever giving me an ounce of grief.
PS. I think that VW Bugs are cute.

the grand cherokee is a far superior vehicle it has more power, comfort, and safety features than a bug, a bug is good BASIC transportation, but for an all around nice, safe, reliable vehicle, there's no competition

See if you can find an old ORIGINAL BEETLE (air cooled with rear engine over the drive wheels) and it will be your best friend, AND sometimes out perform 4x4 in the snow! I have a classic 1969 and Iove it dearly.
