They usually do "flybys" right after the National Anthem...I think it celebrates the freedom we have in our country to be able to spend time watching something as trivial as a sporting event instead of fighting a civil war or worry about where our next meal is coming from...US citizens are very lucky...we tend to take that for granted. It is also a tribute to the sacrifices our members of the armed forces make...

They don't ALWAYS use fighter jets. I've seen bombers, miltary helicopters, as well as vintage airplane clubs flying WW2 propeller driven fighters and bombers. At one race I attended used air racing planes. Sky jumpers and precision aerobactic manuveres are also a favorite for pre-race activities. Riverside Raceway was next door to March Air Force Base and B-52's would touch & go during the race. Orange County Raceway was next door to El Toro Marine Base, and fighters were constantly taking off during races.

Well for one thing they do this as a show of support for the American troops around the world. Also the military uses this as a training exercise to be at a certain point at a certain time, not just pilots but maintenance crews and ground crews.

Actually If you look closely they are flying in the missing man formation. To honor those who are no longer with us. And for our soldiers around the world.

I honestly don't know, but at every NASCAR race that I have been to, it actually brings tears to my eyes. It is one of the most awesome things to watch. At the Vegas track, the base is right by and you can watch them practice before the race. Great job boys....
