check the video capabilities. to do this, select the run from the start menu and type dxdiag , hit enter, this tells about your system.

If you recently bought your computer, or if it has a Core 2 Duo processor it is a 64 bit. To double check, right click my computer and click properties. In the General tab, there should be some information about your computer. If it says 64 bit there then it is 64 bit if not then its 32. Be warned however, there is very few software and drivers out there for 64 bit so dont expect it to be like your normal 32. I'd recommend the 32 bit for now. Ultimately, its up to you.

Good luck!

Neither dxdiag nor the "my computer" general information will tell you directly if your computer's CPU is capable of running a 64-bit operating system.

They will, however, tell you what CPU you have. With that information you can search for your CPU and discover what its capabilities are.

All "Athlon 64" processors are 64-bit capable. All "Pentium D" (dual core) processors are 64-bit capable. Others you will have to check with the manufacturer's website.

Read your computer manual to see it has a 64 bit CPU installed.

If you can't find the info, Email or call the company you bought your PC from and ask them.

TIP: Wait for Vista Service Pack 1 before you buy, many printers, etc. aren't supported yet.

PC Helper's answer was right. Don't take this wrong, but if you're asking this question, you probably don't need a 64bit OS.

The vast majority of users don't need the capabilities of a 64bit OS now. Particularly because there's little 64bit software right now.
