Most spoken languages in the world - Year 2005 (maternal language + second language)

1- Chinese (mandarin) 1 billion people - China + Singapor + Taiwan

2- English. 508 millions - USA + Canada +UK + Australia + N-Z + India

3- Spanish 382 millions - Spain + Latin America

4- Hindi 315 millions - India + Pakistan

5- French 290 millions - France + Belgium + Switzerland + Canada + West Africa + North Africa.

...8- Arabic 230 millions - North Africa + Middle East.

...12 - German 126 millions - Germany + Austria

In the futur, German and french will become less important but stay in the most spoken languages. There are at least 6000 languages in the world !!!

Yes, when it comes to the number of people who speak it. In today's society, knowing Chinese or Arabic would be more beneficial then German or French, but I'd still like to learn French because I think it is a romantic language, unlike German.

Most Germans can speak English. so In business its better to know Japanese and Chinese and for a government job its good to know Arabic.

German will always have a place on the international scene(it will become less important), but French will soon become the new Latin.

Arabic is the main language of Europe. The historic European languages are only spoken by the minorities (aka, citizens) of those countries
