I'm a 20 year old girl, and I'll be living/working in Brooklyn and in Manhattan, NYC this summer. I'd like to enjoy each and every afternoon and night this summer and take advantage of the city. I'm familiar with the basics of NYC. What are some fun things I can do to really absorb the arts and culture this summer? What are local favorites I can partake in easily on my own?

Since you'll be here for an entire Summer, the best way to discover and learn about New York is to walk through its neighborhoods. Each neighborhood in New York (especially the outer boroughs) is almost its own world with its unique multicultural flavor.

For example: Walk through Central Park one day and then walk through Prospect Park another time and compare . . . Though Central Park is more famous, many people prefer Prospect Park. While engaging in a walk do some research and find out where some nice shops (window shopping) and restaurants in the neighborhood are that you can visit. In New York you can taste the cuisine of dozens of countries!

Walk through Greenwich Village, visit the communities of Astoria or Williamsburgh! Find out when museums have free or low cost days to take advantage of the arts. Ride the Staten Island Ferry and cruise by the Statue of Liberty for free. Go to Van Courtlandt Park in the Bronx and check out Yankee Stadium.

You can visit websites such as www.timeoutny.com to see what's new and happening in the city each week.

Have a great Summer in New York, I am sure that you'll want to stay after your Summer is over!

Besides the obvious (half-price theatre tickets, free events in the parks), take the subway down to Coney Island. There's a beautiful aquarium there, plus the amusement park and the original Nathan's. Also, the Cyclones, the Mets minor-league baseball team, have a beautiful stadium there.
