Back pain had many many cause, usually it is located between the L4 L5 vertebra, but it really depends on age, what you were doing and if you have a history of osteoarthritis or calcium deficiency in your family. If you doctor is not giving you answers you need to see a specialist. I don't recommend a chiropractor if the cause is NOT muscular.

Sounds like you may have a slipped or herniated disc. I have a long time back injury that affects me just like that. First thing you should do is see an orthopaedic doctor and get diagnosed. Possibly an MRI and xrays. The doctor will be able to prescribe muscle relaxers and/ or pain medication, depending on the problem. Then you will need to get in the habit of proper body mechanics. Bend at the knees.. no heavy lifting.. etc. Do core excersizes. Etc.
Good Luck.

Don't put this off too much more, unless you really do not want to return to work. GO TO THE DR NOW.
Did this happen to you at work? If it did , then you absolutely need to fill out an incident report. I would rather take the time off now to heal then end up in the position i am currently in- 'ONE INJURY- NOW 20 YRS OUT OF WORK- it just got worse cuz i did not attend to it right away. You probably have nerve damage that is causing the extreme pain.. and it can lead to other problems, from paralysis (extreme) and also lead to bladder problems, this is no joke- - this becomes the worse case scenario...

Lower back pain can mean various things but since you also claim leg pain, this could mean (if you're leg pain goes down back in the middle), you have a disc problem that might be pinching the sciatica nerve(main nerve).
This can give bad pain and needs medical attention.
If you're unable to be a productive worker due to health problems, by labor law, you can not be laid off but you might not have paid sick days coming, depends on you're Contract.
Kidney problems can also result in lower back pain and if female, female organs infections, can also end up with back pain.

Muscles can have knots (trigger points) that make them tight which in turn put pressure on nerves and other things causing pain.
Molasses - a couple of swigs or Bananas 1 or 2 - both contain magnesium and potassium for muscles.
Try working with the principles taught in The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.
I use a chiropractor and massage therapist with it

Low back and leg pain could be a sign of a spinal disc problem.
DO NOT DO ANY FULL SPINAL FLEXION STRETCHING OR EXERCISES. DO NOT TWIST YOUR WAIST WHILE CARRYING SOMETHING.
If you are cleared by the Dr. Then massage and physical therapy are in order.
If you got hurt at work they may be liable to pay for your health care and if they fire you, you may have legal recourse as an option, in which case you should consult an attorney.

Go see a chiropractor.
Use ice packs to help alleviate pain.
Do some low back stretching exercises. If you don't know any, email me.
Is this due to a work-related incident or accident? If so, you can get workmen's compensation to pay for therapy AND you can take paid time off. They can't legally lay you off for that (but they can find other 'reasons' to lay you off).
Best concentrate on getting better so you'll be able to keep working - for the same or another company!

Get a referral to see an interventional pain management specialist. He can help diagnose and treat your pain with a combination of injections, medications, and physical therapy. The sooner you see one and begin treatment the better the chance you have of recovery.

the best relief i can think of would simply be icy hot rub, or patch....
i would relax it, and not do any work that would strain it (when youre off your job)
yea they could lay you off, they can do anything they want.
