Given that the colour green is considered by artists, designers and pyschologists to be a "restful colour", why then, do the Military "wear green uniforms"?

Or, should the question be, why do artists, designers and psychologists consider green to be a "restful colour"?

Psychologists reckon : http://psychology.about.com/od/sensationandperception/a/color_green.htm

Grean also represents tranquility, good luck, health, and jealousy.
Green is often used in decorating for its calming effect.
Green is thought to relieve stress and help heal.

How ironic is the psychologists reasoning...?

FYI I fully understand why combats are "green"...before you all go off on one

The uniforms for land troops were based on the cold war. America and it's allies were gearing up for another war in the European theater. Green being the primary color of the surroundings. The uniforms change depending on where the troops are conducting operations. The American Civil War also played a part in establishing a need for overall all uniform color for troops. During the civil war many of the company's were made up from communities and nationalities. Many of these companies did not were the traditional blue and gray uniform. Many of these companies made there own variation of a uniform and it became difficult to tell who was who on the battle field. If you study military history you will discover many interesting things such as this. My favorite being that many of the basic American military tactics are derived from studying the American Wild Turkey.

Perhaps because green is a relatively neutral colour, it looks smart and most people can carry it off.

I think the navy took blue, so that was out.

Red is too bold, and besides, it has been used by the military before (and is still here, in the UK for certain people).

Purple or pink would look silly. Black is too formal and funerial. Grey and yellow are both ugly for uniforms and orange would look horrid too. Which really leaves green...

Green is the color of foliage. If one is going to be hard to see it would be a good idea to start with green. In the desert they wear tan or brown to make it harder to be seen. It probably has very little to do with what psycholists think.

The military don't ware green anymore. Their uniforms match the terrain that they will be deployed to. It's called camouflaged.

Green is considered restful and a common uniform color for the same reason: they bring to mind vegetation. Grass, trees, idyllic surroundings (in which to hide and kill your enemy).

It doesnt matter what artists think, green is camo, its to help you blend in with trees. And in iraq they dont wear green thay wear tan colors to blend in with sand.
