depends on whether you want to go buy a crimping iron or not. i don't know if it'll work the same for an african american girl as it does for a white girl, but you could try washing your hair and then braiding it before bed. when you take the braids out in the a.m., they'll have that crimpd look. how small or large the waves depends on how many sections you braid the hair into. if you use a styling product like gel or hairspray, and then braid your hair, it'll do the same thing, but if you undo the braids before the product is thoroughly dry, which takes longer than if you just wet or wash it, the crimping effect won't last. also, gel can end up really flaky, and hair spray can end up sticky. whichever way you try, the kind of hair you have determines how well any of them will work and how long the crimp lasts.

You need a crimping iron, which you can get at a beauty supply store like sally's. Or you could try putting it in little braids at night, spraying it with hair spray, tie your hair up, and in the morning take the braids out it should look crimped.

u could get a crimper (it kinda looks like a flat iron with waves) or you could braid your hair and leave it in for a couple hours, but that doesn't work for me it works for my sister though.
