Yes, it's normal , especially since you have OCD, but you don't have to live like this.
There's a great book out there called *Brain Lock* and my husband's been using it for a few months - and we've seen a LOT of improvement !
We didn't want to go the psychologists and medication route, and it's worked wonders !!

Basically, just reminding yourself that it's not YOU doing the compulsions, but your OCD making you do them, can help you make huge changes. By re-patterning your brain, and replacing the obsessive thoughts with something else you really can overcome the OCD.

I was at my wits end with my husband and was considering divorce.... but once I understood what was going on, I bought the book, we started using it and within a month, things were 90% better !!

A review from Amazon :

**This text, written by a psychiatrist experienced in treatment and research on OCD, presents a fairly simple but effective approach to dealing with troubling symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. He demystifies the nature and symptoms of the disorder and explains the interaction of the biological and behavioral elements of OCD.
His program focuses on empowering the individual with OCD so that he or she can take an active role in decreasing or eliminating obsessions and compulsions. I often recommend the book to adults and adolescents who have OCD. When a person with OCD is engaged in cognitive-behavioral therapy, treatment is more successful if the individual feels empowered and does "homework" outside of the therapy session. This book reinforces this process.**

You may not have a severe problem, but if you want to better understand why you do what you do, the book is a great place to start.

I hope this helps ....

You don't have to count things to have OCD. There are different forms of OCD and they can evolve over time the longer you have the condition. OCD is characterized by unpleasant, intrusive thoughts and repetive rituals done to relieve the anxiety. Depending on how serious your illness is, it can take up alot of your time and affect your social and work life...

Nothing about OCD is really normal. The good thing I suppose is that we can at least rationalize that our behavior is bizarre and irrational. The problem is that we can't stop it...

For someone having OCD it is. I too count things and want things to add up to even or odd numbers, depending on my mood. I also have a tendency to repeat things, unsure if the person who is listening to me heard what I was saying. I hate it when I do it, but I just want people to understand what I am saying. (See, I even repeat myself when I type-because I want you to understand what I am saying ;-)

it is completely normal. i have ocd. i dont count either or repeat things. counting is just one type of symptom not all people count. ocd is when you obsess over certain things. i have a compulsion where i have to make everything symetrical. i dont count thoguh. i have other things too that i obses over but im completely normal so dont worry.

p.s. its only harmful to you if it interferes with your normal life but as long as it doesnt youre fine.... but if it really bothers you, you can get medication or talk to a therapist who can cure it.

i used to suffer with ocd, i counted things a lot and would only cross the road at the same place, everyones different, its usually caused by some emotional problems we cant control, but we control other things in our life, that arent related

It isn't normal, but a lot more people have it than you think. Every day I get in my car, start it, then I think I forgot to lock the door, turn off the coffee pot/iron etc. I always come back in the house and check everything. It is always locked/turned off, but I do this every single day.

OCD is a mental condition. Go see a psychatrist and they can prescribe medication that will help with this condition.
