Most museums are non-profit organizations, supported by donors, corporate gifts, and volunteers. If you check the annual report on most of these organizations, they are typically educational foundations with endowments from various other foundations and government grants.

I coordinate a teen volunteer program with the Natural History Museum here in southern California. The museum works directly with volunteers, and works through several other volunteer groups, including our local volunteer center, through which my program is run.

You might want to consider checking with your local volunteer center to see if they have run a program through the museum. As a non-profit organization, your volunteer center works directly with a wide variety of non-profit organizations, and will provide the appropriate paperwork for your school credit as well.
