My recommendation is don't. First they are more expensive than in China. Of course, I don't expect you to fly to China to buy some trinkets but you never know what you are getting. They could sell you cheap low quality pearls or fakes.

You can buy all these trinkets from the States you know. There are a lot of shops that sell things from China. You might pay a little bit more but at least you know what you are getting.

Even when I shop in China for silk or pearls, I go with a Chinese friend who is knowledgable about it or I go to government shops where they only sell certified genuine stuff and I do pay more but I know I am getting the real things.

Don't worry, it's really not. My friend's dad has been to china and he came back with tons of real jewelry. It was so inexpensive because of the exchange rate.
For instance the Louis Vuitton purse he bought me was like 120 dollars there...but it only cost him 12 in US dollars.

Costume jewellery is OK - good quality and inexpensive. But for the 'named' designer stuff - be very very wary

There's an old saying:

'If something looks too good to be true, it probably is.'
