Look for an older Honda that's only had one owner. These things keep going forever. I'm assuming you need a beater. A 10 or more year old Civic will be most reliable for the money.

It has to be something small, with a tiny engine, a standard transmission. Then you learn how to drive it economically, barely using the brakes, coasting lots and staying home more. They can actually be quite fun because they are smooth, quiet, and nimble.
