That depends on what nascar series your talking about. Nextel and busch series start with 43 (some of which are provisional spots) but the truck series starts with 36 drivers.

Not always-only a few races have started with fewer than 43 because of engine failures..That is the number they want to have though...

All points races do, not all exibition races such as the allstar race, the bud shootout etc.

yes. some get a provisional start while most qualify. there is always 43 cars.
