There is no way to make sure your cat will come back if you let it loose. Think of all the terrible things that could happen. How about fencing in a small area of your yard? I used to take my cats out on a leash, but now have one too many to handle. I screened in my porch and they are very happy to sit out there and watch birds. The birds are safe and so are the cats. It's a win win situation for all of us.

Generally, if you have a tag on your cat, she is up to date on her rabies shots, up to date on ALL vaccines, and you have some sort of flea/tick protection (ask your vet), then it is fine to let them out.
Most townships will tell you the regulations (meaning, if they'll fine you if she's out) if you call.
Anyway, if you keep them in for a while, show them love and affection and FOOD, then they will wander outside and come back when they are hungry or want to visit. I've occaisionally had a cat stay out overnight, but rarely. If you are a nice owner, they'll want to see you and won't get lost, they're very smart and savvy!
But, it is a personal decision - some say it is more dangerous to let kitty out (which it is) but some say that kitty has a happier life if she is out and following her hunting instints (which I believe). You decide. For what it's worth, I've had cats my whole life, always indoor/outdoor - none have ever gotten lost, and all have died of natural causes after 10+ years. Good luck!

It is irresponsible to allow a cat to roam outdoors. Keep it indoors at ALL times. I actually trap cats in my neighborhood and turn them over to the authorities all the time.
It is a $150 fine to leave cats at large here.... (minor misdemeanor).
They are destructive to the natural ecosystem, and it is worse for that cat.... cats that live indoors live longer and healthier lives.

If you're willing to go outside with them, you can leash train them. If not, you can get a system called "Invisible fence". It's endorsed by the ASPCA as being humane. This will train them to stay inside a certain area(your yard). We just go outside with ours(all 6 of them) and then bring them in when we come in.

Cats know where the food is, they will come back. Mine has escaped a few times and she always comes back.
