"PDF" (Portable Document Format) is a proprietary format that allows you to read electronic documents, either on or off line. This format provides a page-by-page view of documents, exactly as they appear in their printed form, as well as allowing keyword search.

PDF stands for "portable document format." That said, what it actually IS, is a system for documents to be exchanged between computers without worrying about differences in operating system, or software. A PDF is basically the file that would be sent to your printer when you hit the print key, so unless it's straight text it can't be edited after the pdf file is made. A program famous for it's pdf handling would be one like Adobe Acrobat.
