I am the owner of a pet store. If I put in one canary per cage, I have one bird too many. If I put in two canaries per cage, I have one cage too many. How many cages and canaries do I have?

Let x = number of canaries. x -1 = number of cages.

Since there are two canaries per cage in the second one, then
x/2 + 1= x-1

x/2 = x-2
x = 2x -4
x = 4
Four canaries, three cages.

This probably would be better thought through with simple logic, but I like algebra.
