This is a two-year-old Dell desktop. I checked how many programs start up when I turn it on -- there are about 40 of them. How can I tell which programs I can safely delete from the start-up list?

Actually it is safe to remove everything except your anti-virus program from the start up list. Simply put, you can delete all of the programs that you wish but remember to keep the ones that you feel are most important when starting up your machine.

I have removed all 22 programs that were causing my PC to load slowly upon startup and now my machine loads quickly and behaves as if it were brand new and it doesn't affect the programs that I removed in the least......hope this helps!!!

Don't delete, just take them out one at a time. Make a few notes as to what you remove and the date removed.
When you determine what you no longer need, them delete the programs.
Make sure you have copies to reinstall if you change your mind. And before you start deleting, make a back-up that you can refer to to put it all back. Often when removing programs there will be a mistake and a needed file will get trashed.
It could be wise to make a copy of the operating system first to reinstall errors.

there should be about 24 to 28 system or dell programs starting without firewalls or a/v s. look in task manager after it's booted and see if theres any you dont need for start up. there are a few good sites on the web to look at, type in start up programs in search, you'll find one or two. black vipers site comes to mine. also adware/spyware and temp files can slow it down.

The best software to keep running at startup should only be your anti-virus, spywareblocker and firewall. Other programs should be optional upon how often you use it when you work on your computer.
