Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darken our skin?

Because skin is living and dynamic - it produces pigment in response to sunlight. Hair is dead, and has no way to replace the pigment that gets bleached out by the sun.

If you leave a dead body in the sun, its skin will also bleach out.
