A rottweiler! They ar wonderful family dogs and their natural instinct is to protect their family. They know their place in the family. They are very smart and want to please you. They require little formal training, just teach them what you want them to do and they will do it. I never worry about my children if they are with the dogs.
As for family... I didn't have to buy a walker to help my 3 year old leran to walk... she used the dogs. When she was an infant, one of my dogs would lay by her in the bed so that she couldn't roll off. My 12 year old stepdaughter plays soccer with one of our dogs. I tell the kids if they can keep the ball from her they can keep it from any kid they would play against.
If the kids are playing in the yard on the trampoline or swing set and there is someone in the yard the dogs don't know. They will stay between the kids and the stranger and just watch to make sure nothing happens.
I go to school 365 miles from where I live. I live in a house in a "not so good" neighborhood by myself. My husband is back home with the kids. I brought some of my dogs with me. My neighbors tell me that the crime rate in the neighborhood has gone down since I moved in. Just having the dogs in the yard keeps the rif-raf off the street.
They are lovable, friendly dogs and are wonderful with the family. One bit of suggestion... if you do decide on a rottweiler, talk to the breeder and meet the parents. The parents are usually a good representation of the temperment of the puppies. Hyper parents CAN make for hyper puppies. There is always the exception... (i have a few exceptions). I hope this helps. And I hope you decide on a rottie... I wouldn't have any other breed with my family.

Most dogs are naturally protective of their people, from the biggest, baddest German Shepherds to the littlest Toy Fox Terrier. The little dogs will be barkers and alert to the fact that someone is around the house and the bigger dog will not only alert, but could act, if need be. Any dog you get would have to be put through obedience training and that will have to be practiced almost daily to keep the dog obedient. You don't want a dog that is so fierce that your family can't have visitors over. Whatever dog you choose will become a member of your "pack" and will naturally feel protective, no matter what size. Make sure that your whole family is alpha or leader to the dog so that it will treat everyone with deference and listen to everyone, even your little girls. Go to your local animal shelter, I bet the perfect dog is waiting for you visit.

1. You need a dog that barks. That is so the "bad guys" will know there is a dog inside the house so they will avoid the house.
2. You need a dog that is trained. You do not want a dog attacking someone just because they are inside your house. You need a dog that attacks on command and you definitely want to be able to call the dog off. Your kids need to be trained also as you do not want them telling the dog to attack someone as a joke.
4. You need to let the dog roam the house. Locking it in a kennel or in one bedroom at night kind of defeats the purpose of having a guard dog. Also consider the size of your home and yard. A big dog is what most people think of when they talk about guard dogs, but if you do not have room for them to run, they do not do well. Consider a Canaan Dog. Kind of rare but a good size, very territorial, easily trained and a good companion.
3. You also need layered defense if you are really worried. Do not just rely on a dog. Motion lights outside. Alarm company sign in front. Perimeter alarm system with 24/7 monitoring. Panic button for the wife. Dog. Get your wife a can of pepper spray. Along the same lines, consider getting her a Taser.
4. Lastly, consider getting your wife a gun and having a professional teach her how to use it. She can keep it locked in a gun box (one the girls can not open) near the bed. Put a laser sight on the gun. Nothing scares criminals as much as being in someone's home in the dark and having a little red light appear on their chest.

Do you know exactly how much dogs cost? After food, vaccinations, vets bills etc. you will probably find an alarm much cheaper.
Dogs are a lifetime commitment and you should be fully aware of the costs and the dedication involved in keeping one. If you work long hours then a dog is not for you. A dog needs a lot of attention and should not be left alone for a long period of time.
I suggest you scrap the dog idea and start saving for a decent alarm. It will be a lot cheaper in the long run!

If you can't afford an alarm, you certainly can't afford to keep a dog. What will you do if it gets ill? Vet's bills are very expensive these days. Even without vet bills, there is a food bill (not small for the size of dog you would need) and regular worming & innoculations. If you are not experienced with dogs, it is very dangerous to try & train a large dog yourself, especially with young children around. Definitely not a good idea.

To be honest an alarm system would work out cheaper,
purchase price of dog, anything up to £1,500 you'd want a puppy,so as it could be well reared with your children,so theres two years of innoculations, worming treatments, food, vet care,to get one defence trained can cost anything up to £2,000 the dog would have to come from well bred, health tested parents, and even then there is no guarantee the dog will protect when push comes to shove, also if your dog bites someone you will be held responsible by the courts,so you will also need insurance,
sorry

Well that rules out labradors and beagles. Out of the 1o best family dogs listed by AKC the only dog that meets your criteria is the german shepard. They are listed in the top 10 family dogs, are great with kids and are very protective of home and family.

all dogs have a natural guard which im sure youve already been told a thousand times! i own dobermans and i think they are great but they have to be trained with the upmost care, like most. ive never trained mine to guard me on command-they are very loyal and do it anyway.just take care to get your chosen dog from a reputable breeder and do lots of research into the breed you like.but dude if you cant afford an alarm how the hell will you feed another mouth.

go to a shelter to get a dog (cheaper then purebred at a breeder) that isnt a puppy and is like 2-4 yrs old. ask the workers at the shelter what they think. most likely a german sheperd mix, an akita mix (my friend had an akita that was great with her when she was a baby and protected them from an intruder) or possibly a pitbull mix.
but dont forget of the vet expenses and the food and toy expenses-dont forget to train the dog too
good luck!

Most people say that you need a bull dog. I own a german shepard and a golden retriever. About a week ago someone broke into our house. It was about midnight and we were all fast asleep. When my dog heard a noise he barked so loud I think the whole street heard him! He woke us up and we got the robber! I would get one of the two dogs we had.
