do 10 yr old boys like Shrek, Rocket Power, Rugrats etc? I'm trying to buy a dvd or computer game for my friends sons birthday

A good dvd would be open season or Barnyard
Try a racing game for the computer. Another one would be sims pets.

Yes I would say a 10 yr old would like Shrek, Monster House, Barnyard, Open Season. I am sure they would like Rocket Power. Another suggestion is to buy a gift card and they can pick out their own movie or buy something else they want. I recently bought a movie gift certificate as a child gift. I included enough so they could go to the movies a couple of times and get snacks from the snack bar. The child though that was so great, like a really great grown up gift. A movie card of his own.

My 10 yr old would reject all of the above for being too babyish. As far as games go, I won't let him have anything I think is too violent (shooting, hooker killing, etc.) but he does have, and enjoy: Mario games, Lord of the Rings, Zelda, car racing games, wrestling games (just check out the content first), Harry Potter games, sports games.
For movies: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, Raiders of the Lost Ark. But also try surprising him with something you like and that he might not see on his own: my son loves WWII movies like The Longest Day and The Guns of Navarone; oldies The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, The Searchers; musicals like Hair and West Side Story; old fun movies like The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad and Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Those you mentioned are too babyish for a 10y/o boy. Try sports related or skateboarding games. For DVDs I suggest Napoleon Dynamite, The Ringers, Zoolander, Series of unfortunate events, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribean, Star wars... Hope this helps.

usually 10 year old boys like sports! rocket power might be something good a few years ago when it was in style! Rugrats os more of a baby show, i dont think a 10 year old boy would like rugrats. Try getting him a tony hawk game, or something sportsy, he'll like it and you wont be getting something too babyish!
