Yes, this is very normal. The wisdom teeth are very far back with a small, tight area and the opening to remove them must be as large or larger than that of the tooth depending upon if the tooth is "erupted" or "impacted." Sometimes the tissue has to be opened to remove a tooth that isn't in the straight up and down "erupted" position or it's "impacted" laying sideways under the tissue, as the case may be here. This is a very small area with adjoining soft tissue that sometimes is opened or may get torn during the extraction procedure or it may be that this tissue was all there was to attach a suture with. So if you have some sutures in the cheek or jaw area, it was necessary to place them there to close the area. I'm not familiar with what type of extraction procedure you had, surgical or semi surgical or how difficult it was for the removal. But if you have sutures placed, it was because the dentist felt it was necessary to close the area for better and faster healing to take place and reduce the pain and soreness for you. Hope I've answered your question in a way that you can understand better. Good luck and take care to follow the dentist post op instructions.

GOOD QUESTION, WHERE THE STITCHES ARE ACTUALLY PLACED ARE INTO THE GUMS THAT ARE COVERING YOUR JAW.
MOST OF THOSE ARE THE TYPE THAT DISSOLVE ON THEIR OWN. OCCASIONALLY THEY ARE THE KIND THAT HAVE TO BE REMOVED BY THE DENTIST BECAUSE THEY ARE THE NON-DISSOLVING KIND.
THE REASON WHY STITCHES ARE PLACED IS TO PREVENT THE BONE FROM BEING EXPOSED TO THE ORAL CAVITY AND TO SPEED HEALING.
