Maybe if he were in a foxhole he wouldn't have been killed.

But the thing that always got me about that saying is - Who would you rather have fighting next you you: someone who thinks that if he dies he is going to paradise or someone who thinks that there is nothing after death and will do anything to hang onto life?

I found out he was an atheist after he died. Great question by the way.

They do not say it as scientific proof. They simply say that when a person is facing death there tends to be a desire to want an after life.
