Since it is during Lent, will it still be fun on Bourbon Street? I have read you're not supposed to wear beads after Fat Tuesday. Does this rule apply in the French Quarter? Am I wasting my time?

New Orleans is a ghost town after Mardi Gras. On Wednesday, everyone is nursing their hangovers, and after that-it's back to work and/or school! The weekend after Mardi Gras is always kind of depressing, actually.

You can NOT wear Mardi Gras beads after Mardi Gras is over. Do you walk around with your trick-or-treat jack-o-lantern after Halloween is over? If you do, everyone will know you're a tourist and you will be a target for every con or scam artist in the Quarter.

Ash Wednesday until the weekend is pretty dead. This coming weekend will be pretty chill, but New Orleans is always fun. There are always people visiting the French Quarter from abroad who are not going to let lent stand in their way of having fun. No matter what kind of fun you are looking for, you will be able to find it. Plus, like anywhere, the number of people out is more related to the weather than anything.

But, yes, Mardi Gras is over on Ash Wednesday. Wearing beads is not forbidden, but the fashion police will issue citations. And, at any time of year, walking around wearing a ton of beads (like reading a map) singles you out as being a tourist.

When I lived in Nawlins, about 10 years ago, I got my kicks wearing a Hawaiian shirt and Green Bay ballcap, cheap camera on my neck and huge map in my hip pocket! My buddies hanging around Jackson Square got a big laugh when I'd ask "another" tourist if they knew where "Char-tress" is! Yes, I was one of the buskers, and we had a ball the week after Shrove, celebrating old Marty Graw's birthday!
