How about thanking her for all the meals she's cooked for you or all the times she's driven you to school or sporting events. If it weren't for her, you wouldn't even be here. Surely, you've had SOME kind of a relationship to draw on.

How about nothing smart or hurtful. A letter is a good idea. Tell her you know that you and her have not always seen eye to eye but that doesn't stop you from loving her. Even though you are different or are you, are you and her a lot alike, maybe that's the problem, maybe she sees a lot of herself in you and she doesn't know how to handle that. don't ever be embarrassed in public telling your mom that you love and care for her. Yes it is embarrassing but all the kids have to do it, so offer to go first, then everyone will concentrate on the other kids and not you. Hey, write her a letter and stand up-say-this is personnel for mom to read by herself at home. then say-I love you just for being you.

If you are feeling put on the spot, voice your opinion to your dad. Maybe, he will realize that his idea is not that easy for you. Does he understand your feelings, as to why you are uncomfortable in following this idea of "public sharing of precious moments"Express to him that you would like to be given the option ,of how YOU would like to express your Mothers birthday. Your dad needs to understand that everyone should not have to express their feelings towards another, following one specific format. If he refuses not to be sympathetic to your situation, maybe you could try and keep your statement, or memory, short and generalized. Maybe you could express to your mom that you would like to get closer or spend some time with her. I do not know the details of your moms relationship with you, but do your best. I am sorry you are in this situation.

My son wrote me a letter me before he he was killed.
I read and reread it on his birthday and when ever I think about him....I wouldnt take any thing for that letter.
Its something that your mom will keep forever, its the sweets thing you could do and it doesnt cost anything.
You can start off by saying this is why I love you mom.

Gotta disagree with the crowd, here. It is possible to have a very crappy relationship with one's Mom. The only thing I'd lookout for here is pissing off the family members that you do get along with.
I think I'd come up with something very non-committal and go with that. Or, you could say, "Thanks for teaching me that I am a complete person who can get along without parental support. It would have been great to have had you on my side, but I'm fine, now. Thanks."
