It depends on how you count. If you ask a person if they are an atheist when they want to do something against God, you will get a high number. But if you ask a person if they are an atheist when they are in danger of their own or someone they loves death you will get a very low number indeed. Funny how that works.

If you mean those who don't take religion seriously (except as the threat to freedom and democracy that it is), I would say close to 50%, and thank god for that!

I had a small world atlas a few years back with statistics on religion or the lack thereof. The two categories of 'atheist' and 'non-religious' added up to more than 50%.

According to the CIA world factbook ( a wonderful resource) this is the breakdown in the USA:

Protestant 52%, Roman Catholic 24%, Mormon 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim 1%, other 10%, none 10% (2002 est.)

probably somewhere between 5-10%

but atheists are not a hard and fast category
most atheists don't self-identify as atheists. the only thing that makes them atheists is their lack of belief in God and religion.

there are lots of people might fall into some grey area - atheism, agnosticism, paganism, eastern religions, etc. who might or might not consider themselves atheists

Hard to say for sure. Recent studies have put the number of non-religious people in the US (atheist, agnostic, secular, non-religious) at about 12%.

Somewhere between 7-15%. You can find pretty different answers to that question depending on exactly how the poll questions are worded.

As far as I have heard, I believe it is 3-5 percent, but I am not sure of the information.

It's a hard stat to pin down because most people are too chicken to declare their Atheistness.

God loves Atheists, they are so low maintenance.
