Lying is an occupation,
Used by all who mean to rise;
Politicians owe their station,
But to well concerted lies.

These to lovers give assistance,
To ensnare the fair-ones heart;
And virgin's best resistance
Yields to this commanding art.

Study this superior science,
Would you rise in church or state;
Bid to truth a bol defiance,
Tis the practice of the great.

Is there some shred of truth in this?

Unfortunately, yes. Lying -- or a least, lying skillfully -- is a useful art in all walks of life, both in public and in private. Saying something nice that you don't mean can win you a friend; concealing your responsibility for something which went wrong can save you from trouble; backing a directive, irrespective of your belief in it, can aid your career by demonstrating loyalty to your superiors. And so on.

You need what advantages you can get in this life.
