go to a lawn and garden store or a petsmart and they have chemical you can spray in to the ground that repel dgos and cats. its great for flowerbeds and stuff

The easiest way is to make some covers for the sand pit. They can be simple plywood sheets with a treated timber edge or just a rubber mat.
That stops the cats using it like a litter box while the pit is not in use.

You can put moth balls in the pits.
Agway does sell a powder you can put in the sand that will deter them, I don't remember the name of it, but it does work.

I think that moth balls or flakes would work, they will also keep other critters away from the pits. If it doesn't work, the pet store should have stuff that they can recommend.
