I just purchased this rifle for 79.00, no cosmoline (pre cleaned) with matching numbers with a nice stock and factory refinnished action and barrel, looking for others mosin fans who might know more about the true ballistics and nature of this model and frankly if this was as good as deal (price wise) as i was led to belive?

It is safe to say the 7.62x54R is real close to the 30-06 and above the 30-40 Krag,
With muzzle velocity and bullet energy in this range it would work well in the same applications as ether the 30-40 Krag or the 30-06.
The 7.62x54R was used heavily as a sniper cartridge in many country, on many battle fields with great success.
The 7.62x54R is no slouch by any means, and has a home on the battle field and as a hunting cartridge.

The Shooter's Bible shows two Norma factory loads for the 7.62x54R. These are reasonably available in the U.S. The first uses a 150 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2,953 fps with muzzle energy (ME) of 2,905 ft. lbs. The other uses a 180 grain bullet at a MV of 2,575 fps with ME of 2,651 ft. lbs.

I got one for a couple of years ago and it's great. I think you got a good deal. Do a web search on mosin-nagant, M44 and 7.62x54R for a whole bunch of info, some good, some bad. It's ballistics are similar to the .308 and 30-.06. Not alot of different ammo to be found,or reloading info for that matter, but as someone else mentioned, buy older, corrosive ammo and make sure you clean it properly when done shooting. There are aftermarket stocks available for it and tapco.com sells alot of accessories cheap. Have fun!

I have several Mosin nagant rifles, there's a few gun snobs on this board who refer to them as commie crap, well, those people can go pack sand for all i care, I have Weatherby's that cost several thousand dollars each, and I have my Mosin's that cost between 50 to 300 each, depending on it's configuration and history. My best shooting Mosin is a Tula, round receiver, 1942 91/30 ( the M44's big brother) that I paid 90 dollars for, at 200 yards it shoots 3moa off a bench with iron sights.Gun snobs be damned, the Mosin Nagant rifles are the best bang for the buck, and surplus ammo for them is cheap! 880 rounds for 79 bucks delivered! Yeah corrosive ammo will scare a few uneducated people from using it, all you need is warm water with ammonia in it, and you remove the corrosive salts the primers leave in the barrel and action.Using warm water speeds the drying.

Just picked one up for $102 at the local gun show. Covered in cosmoline but it has a shiny bore and a nice blonde stock. Heck they even threw in 40 rounds of yellow tip surplus ammo. I got a great deal.

They are a love'em or hate'em deal. I love them. I may take mine elk hunting in Colorado this year. Turn more people on to them. As they gain in popularity the ammo makers will produce more and the ammo cost will drop.

it gets selection time because of the fact the excess ammo is so cheap. that's lots in a small equipment. My ninety one/30 is greater precise. in case you like an identical action yet no longer so small, additionally seek for the Finnish M39. be advantageous to make certain the bore. Many M44's are counterbored. wiped out barrels are drilled delicate close to the muzzle to strengthen accuracy, yet no longer greater valuable than a non-worn rifle. Surplus ammo is corrosive. which you're able to no longer turn remote from, yet you're able to scrub and oil the barrel exact in a while. no count if the bayonet is prolonged or no longer can influence the place the bullet hits jointly as aiming. a super sort of human beings purchase those rifles for the 'kick' and the remarkable muzzle flash in low mild. The kick is powerful, yet probably no longer something to be petrified of. you're only greater probably to become tired of taking photographs it only before different rifles. drained as in sore, yet no longer as in bored. purchase it, and a can of ammo too.

Just bought a mosin myself about a month ago, and have been doing research on it (because it is way different). Yes the mosin is a 7.62x54R.....that is the only round it will fire. Prie seems reasonable with what i have compared to online and the local gunshops here. They are going for around 64.00 - 80.00, dependent on condition. couple of great sites for the mosin: http://7.62x54r.net/ and http://www.surplusrifle.com/mosincarbine/ammunition.asp

Yeah, that is a pretty good deal. That seems to a little lower than what the typical pricing of one is. The M-44s tend to retail in the $120-30s.

It's a good hard shooting, staight shooting rifle. It's rugged and not very pretty. It's just a war relic that can be bought cheap at Big 5, I own one and have shot it :)
