It sounds like he might have kennel cough. You should take him to the vet as soon as possible. He could also just have a cold, but it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your pet. You might want to try bottle feeding him some water so he doesn't get dehydrated too. I hope everything works out for you all.

Is he on heartworm preventative? When's the last time you've had a fecal float done on him to check for worms? How old is he?

Get him into the vet first thing in the morning.

Both heartworms and roundworms can create a cough. Heartworms obviously obstructing the heart, but roundworms can travel from the intestines to the throat and to the lungs. When the roundworms get into the trachea, it naturally triggers a cough and they almost seem like they're gagging.

Other intestinal worms can make a dog lethargic, but they don't usually go off their food, as they are typically feeding both themselves and the parasites.

If he is an older dog, it could be something along the lines of congestive heart failure.

LIZZY, I don't work at a vet clinic. I do alot of rescue, and have been through alot with them. Some of them come in in such poor condition, and some come in mainly because of their condition. So my years of experience of being owned by dogs and helping those less fortunate have helped educate me ALOT.

Does your dog play with other dogs? Sounds like he has kennel cough and you should seek Veterinarian attention immediately. Kennel cough is very contagious. Or he could have pneumonia since he has no appetite and is currently not as active as he used to be. Call your Vet now. I would not wait on this. He needs treatment, medicine. If he's sick, he's suffering and you don't want that to go on.

Take him to the vet. Coughing and sleeping all the time are signs of heart disease. If you have not been giving your dog heartworm pills, the FIRST thing you need to do is have him tested for heartworm disease. After that, they will probably do chest x-rays. If it is heartworm, treatment will run you $800 or so.

Methinks Pam works at a vet clinic : )

Your dog could have kennel cough. This is not usually a big problem but does require antibiotics. Any sudden behavioral change like this should be diagnosed by a vet.
