The oldest combat fighting system known to man is Pankration. A greek wrestling style with history and fact based proof dating back to 500 BC. Martial arts were not brought to the far east from India unit 500 AD. There is some theory about when the origional arts were created in India. But other than some stories that really are not dated there is no evidence of a date or how it started.

Seems like many talk from their propaganda backgrounds. Recorded history shows that the Egyptians were the first with a history of MA. However, every culture from the Aztecs to the Zulus have had a form of fighting. In the USA all of the Natives had a form of fighting. IF you are lucky you can find something about the Cheyne Dog Warriors, for example. Yes it is true that the Greeks and then the Romans had a very organized system of fighting.
Nothing can match the 700 years of Gladitorial Games that Rome had. That level of fighting has never been before and never will be again. If you are interested it is a very interesting history and very replete with unarmed and armed training. Actually a lot of it is what modern MMA fighter are trying to imitate. Sort of funny. If you are qualified in this field you know these things.

Yes & no. The two oldest empty handed Asian martial arts are Kalaripatyt from India & Tae Kyun from Korea. The developped independently as far as I know. It was the former that Boddidarma brought to China where he founded the Shaolin Temple. Tae Kyun was a major influence on northern Shaolin. It was Boddidarma who combined fighting with philosophy & meditation to form what we now think of as Asian Martial Arts.

it's very debatable as to the true origins of fighting.

by that I mean that the Mayans had their own discipline of fighting, so did the ancient Egyptians, the Greeks and Romans.

many would say that the origins of Asian Martial Arts are attributed to the Bodhidharma since he was Indonesian.

but does it really matter WHERE Martial Arts really came from?

I'll still study no matter where it comes from. because I love studying them.

to tell you the truth, I really couldn't care less where they came from, what matters is that they are here now and that they've been developed in their respective countries.

and that what really matters is that we progress forward instead of worry about the exact origins of Martial Arts.

yes it's great that we study the past, but we shouldn't really concern ourselves about who gets the credit for developing Martial Arts first.

Not totally true, a portion of martial arts may be attributed to India, but it did not "create" all arts, as some would have you believe.
Mankind has been fighting since its beginnings. Every culture therefore created some style of fighting, therefore martial arts.
This is a bit over simplified, but it is true.

Sidhartta Gautama, founder of buddhism, started un-armed combat in Lumbini Kapilbastu, in Nepal in the early 500 AD. His disciple travelled to China and formed the Shaolin temple schools after he thought the emperor was not taking him seriously, this was around 520-529 AD. The Mongol invasion of China around 1368-1644 spread the art with the name tai-chi, and the rest is history. Yes you are right MA started in India, specifically Nepal.

I AM FROM INDIA AND I FOUND OUT THAT
NOT ALL MARTIAL ARTS HAVE ITS ORIGINS IN INDIA. SHAOLIN KUNGFU, KARATE,MUAY THAI AND INDONESIAN MARTIAL ARTS ETC... MAY HAVE HAD THEIR ORIGINS IN INDIA.BUT NOT PANKRATION.
THE ANCIENT MARTIAL ARTS OF INDIA IS STILL ALIVE AND EMBRACED BY MANY . LIKE KUSHTI(A WRESTLING FORM), KALARIPAYATTU ,THANG TA,SEMBLAN ETC...
IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND THEIR ORIGINS YOU HAVE KNOW INDIAN HISTORY AND EPICS.
BECAUSE MOST OF THEM ARE RECORDED IN THE MAHABHARATA AND OTHER EPICS.
NORTHERN SHAOLIN IS VERY SIMILAR TO KALARIPAYATTU . MUAY THAI TOO HAS ITS ORIGINS IN INDIA, THEIR TECHNIQUES ARE NAMED AFTER HINDU MYTHS AND CHARACTERS MOSTLY FROM RAMAYANA LIKE U HAVE ONE TECHNIQUE HANUMAN RETRURNING FROM LANKA.
MALAYSIAN AND INDONESIAN MARTIAL ARTS TOO HAVE ORIGINS IN INDIA LIKE THE TEACHER IS CALLED A GURU AND THEY CALL THE DEATH TOUCH AS MARMA ADI WHICH NO DOUBT IS AN INDIAN WORD
