I was talking to my mom the other day and she was saying things about how its selfish to commit suicide but I disagree. People don't have a say in whether they want to be born or not, so if you don't get to decide about your beginning than why can't you choose your end?

I think the word 'selfish' is a very stupid word to use for anything.

EVERYONE is essentially selfish in the sense that they are concerned ultimately with how things make them feel. Even if they're worried about someone else's feelings, it's not about what the other person is feeling, it's how that other person's feelings affect them.

So, it's rather dumb for others to label something as selfish, when they're being just as selfish themselves. Are they paying attention at all to the starving people all over the world? NO, most of them are going to their jobs, making money, eating far more than they will ever need, and living in luxury. Don't tell me that isn't selfish!

As for the reality of suicide, I really think it should be a person's own decision whether they live or die. It is their own life, and no one else's. To me, it's kind of like dropping out of school, because I believe the soul is eternal and they're just going to be living on somewhere else as it is. So there's really no point in it...but there might be someone who needs to go and find that out for themselves. Maybe that soul will never commit suicide again, in future lives.

Because you inflict much andguish and guilt on those you love, those around you. If you are nearing the end of a terrible illness and are going to do nothing but suffer for the rest of your life, and there is no hope of a better quality of life, I say do it. However if you have emotional and mental anguish, it seems as though life has hit rock bottom, and noone cares, go see your local Mental Health professional at the nearest hospital or Mental Health Facility. If you are a religious person talking to a clergyman can help.

The reason many would consider it selfish is because you leave your problems behind you and create so many more for those you leave behind. Others will always blame themselves for what you have done. "Why didn't I see how tormented he was? Why didn't I do more to help him? How could I not realize how close he was to doing something terrible?" They will live the rest of their lives with these questions.
My Grandfather always said "If there is something you don't like about yourself, change it." This goes for most things in life, and I know it's not as simple as that makes it sound, but there are always people out there to help you. Clergymen, Socialworkers, Doctors, even going to a police department and telling them you want to kill yourself will get you help from professional psychiatrist. There are so many better ways to fix your life than by ending it. Personally I've always seen it as a sign of weakness. The hardest thing in life, is to live it.

If someone reaches the point that they commit suicide, they are so beyond messed up mentally and emotionally that it is unfair to label them as "selfish." To call someone "selfish" you must assume they are functioning on a reasonable and rational level, and that they are able to make logical decisions. But if they've reached the point of suicide, I think it's safe to say that they are not functioning logically and they are not able to think clearly about the outcome of their behavior.

It can very selfish because it leaves a mess for others to clean up-- not just physically. Lot's of people, I think, have successfully suicided in less selfish ways, by making sure it looked like an accident.

I agree with you. I really don't believe suicide is selfish. I mean, in today's society, you have to do what YOU can to survive. Its exactly like survival of the fittest. Another analogy is, Life is like a game, and suicide is your way of telling people, " I don't lose, I quit!''

Usually a person decides to commit suicide because of some problem they are facing that they think is beyond them.

However, their deaths usually do not solve the problem, it just passes it on to someone else who also then has the problem of the persons death.

It is not only selfish, but also cowardly. . .

when a person commits suicide their troubles end and it is over for them. They do not realize what is does to the people they leave behind. Life is not perfect but suicide is not the answer. When my daughter's good friend commited suicide I really felt guilty for not trying to help this person but It is too late now If you thinking about doing please talk to someone you trust.

i didnt read any of your other answers but suicide is selfish because you leave everyone else to pick up your mess.there is who ever finds you.wont that be a nice memory.then arrange your burial.oh and that should only cost 12,000.00.you left no one
with any real reason why you did it.even if you leave a note.and the sense of why didnt you reach out for help to one of them.they would have been glad to help or try to find you help.and thats a few reasons its selfish to commit suicide.

Suicide is selfish because you are considering your own wishes and not others when doing it, you fail to realize who will clean up the mess when you die, who will have to watch you be buried and will be crying at your funeral; also according to a lot of major religions it is considered an unforgivable sin in which the punishment is death and damnation...
