Dreamless sleep.

Many scriptures speak of death as sleep. Psm.115:15-17; Acts 2:27-31;

The life of the soul is the spirit of God, if the soul is created, if the soul is born or if the soul is resurrected to salvation. So the spirit returns to God who gave it, Psm.104:29,30; 1Cor.15:22-28,51-53; As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Rev.20:1-6,12,13; No Satan in 1000 year reign of Jesus.

Eph.2:7; 3:21; The world with Jesus is without end. John 3:16; 2 Pet.3:13; All made new. Rev.21:1-5 [ all made new ], 8 [ second death ]; Rev.20:7-10; Final cleansing of earth at end of 1000 years. Rev.2:7; All perfect for kingdom paradise of God.

According to the late Carl Sagan who did the Cosmos series... when you die thats it nothing. But there are too many unexplained things to say thats it nothing else. There are a lot of people who die that is there heart stops beating and are brought back using CPR that see a bright light.

I know 2 people that were brought back to life using CPR that did not see the light. One of those people went to church got saved then experienced it again only the second time he did see the light

I am not sure that my answer will be philosophical, but I will give you the information that God gave us through his inspired word, the Bible, about death, and the condition of the dead...

Genesis 3:19: "In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”

Psalm 146: 3 & 4: "3 Do not put YOUR trust in nobles,
Nor in the son of earthling man, to whom no salvation belongs.
4 His spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground;
In that day his thoughts do perish."

Ecclesiastes 3: 19-20: "For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. 20 All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust."

Ecclesiastes 9: 5: "5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten."

Ezekiel 18:4b: ". The soul that is sinning—it itself will die"
Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,"
Romans 6:23a: "For the wages sin pays is death,"

However, the Bible gives us the hope that this is not the end of things forever because it gives us the hope of resurrection to life on earth for most of us...(a perfected earth)

Acts 24:15: "and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous."

John 5: 28 & 29: "28 Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life, those who practiced vile things to a resurrection of judgment."

Psalm 37: 9-11, 29: "9 For evildoers themselves will be cut off,
But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth.
10 And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more;
And you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be.
11 But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth,
And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace."
29 The righteous themselves will possess the earth,
And they will reside forever upon it."

Matthew 5:5: "“Happy are the mild-tempered ones, since they will inherit the earth."

Now notice in the following verse that it says mankind...never are spirits referred to as mankind, only humans are called mankind...

Revelation 21:3 & 4: "With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his peoples. And God himself will be with them. 4 And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”

Basically what you asked is very difficult to answer as its not a one line answer any more. It has become a science. I will suggest you to read the book ' Life after Death' by Swami Avedananda of Sri Ramkrishna Mission.
I am sure you will get your answers there as it is the best book I have ever read on this topic.

When death happens,ie., when the body perishes the eternal indestructible soul within the body goes to another body according to one's karma. Just as one changes new clothes when old cloth is torn, similarly we accept another body(new cloth) when the old body is torn(dies). Just as when a old house we are dwelling collapses, we enter a new house, similarly we give up our old body(where soul lives) and enter new body(house).

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change.Bhagavad-gita-2.12 & 13

Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the nonexistent [the material body] there is no endurance and of the eternal [the soul] there is no change. This they have concluded by studying the nature of both. Bhagavad-gita-2.16
An excerpt from the purport by Srila Prabhupada(ISKCON founder).
There is no endurance of the changing body. That the body is changing every moment by the actions and reactions of the different cells is admitted by modern medical science; and thus growth and old age are taking place in the body. But the spirit soul exists permanently, remaining the same despite all changes of the body and the mind. That is the difference between matter and spirit. By nature, the body is ever changing, and the soul is eternal. This conclusion is established by all classes of seers of the truth, both impersonalist and personalist. In the Vishnu Purana (2.12.38) it is stated that Vishnu and His abodes all have self-illuminated spiritual existence (jyotimsii vishnur bhuvanani vishnuh). The words existent and nonexistent refer only to spirit and matter. That is the version of all seers of truth.

That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible. No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul.
Bhagavad-gita-2.17

Lord Krishna gives in verses 22 to 25, further information.
As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.The soul can never be cut to pieces by any weapon, nor burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind.This individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble, and can be neither burned nor dried. He is everlasting, present everywhere, unchangeable, immovable and eternally the same.It is said that the soul is invisible, inconceivable and immutable. Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

Death is the moment when the spirit of life departs from the body of flesh. The spirit returns unto the Lord and the body returns to the ground.

To the person who dies, not much other than decomposition. For those left behind there's generally a sense of mourning and loss. But for those who knew and cared for the individual, he or she would go on living in the minds and actions of those the deceased influenced while alive.
