Windows has a free cool program called tweak.It can do many customizations one being remove shortcut arrow from icons. Good luck

For Windows XP :
with Tweak UI from Microsoft you can delete or change the arrow icon :

this arrow means shortcut and automaticlly appears when you make a shortcut but for instance if you want a real icon like for my computer or internet explorer just right click on your desktop go to properties then the desktop tab click customize desktop on the bottom and then check the icons you want

1. Start regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfile
3. Delete the IsShortcut registry value.

You may need to restart Windows XP.

If I were you I would not try to remove it. It tells you what is a shortcut and what is the program -- you don't want to accidentally delete a program.
