Your step-dad probably has an exposed blood vessel in his nose, or sinuses. It's pretty common (especially in children), and results in sudden, spontaneous nose bleeds that can be quit profuse at times. Other than applying pressure and cold packs to the bridge of the nose, there isn't much that can be done to treat them at home. Your step-dad should talk about it with his doctor. His doctor can recommend a ear, nose, and throat specialist. The specialist uses a nasoscope to look up there and find the blood vessel. He can then cauterize (burn) it, and the problem usually never returns. It's usually done in office, during a visit.

I would have bad, random nose bleeds last year, I even went to the doctor to see what he had to say. He just said that the lining in my nostril was really thin and dry, and that caused the nose bleed. I started using some nose sprays, like affirin (not sure about spelling) to moisturise my nostrils. Sometimes I would even use vasoline up there, that really kept it nice and moist. Ever since then, I haven't had as many nose bleeds ! And the pregnant thing, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it, maybe he's stressed out about it? And that could possibly cause a nose bleed?

Firstly, to stop a nose bleed he needs to apply hard pressure to the nose, index finger and thumb placed tightly just in the dip above the end of the nose. This sometimes needs to be done for up to 15 minutes. Tilting the head back can also help.If this does not stop it, he may need to attend casualty to have his nose packed. Sometimes the doctor will be able to see a weak vessel in the nostril which can be cauterised. He needs to go to the doctor to have his blood pressure checked and also reveiw any medication which may thin the blood, such as aspirin or warfarin. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear of your step-dads problem, my father in law seems to have the same problem, he recently had to go to the A&E department at our local hospital because he could not stop his nose from bleeding, the doctors sat him in a cubicle and got him to lean forward whilst squeezing the bridge of his nose with his thumb and index finger after around half an hour it stopped bleeding and he was told by the doctors to use this simple method the next time it starts. Good luck.

It would be important to know his full medical history. Has he any bleeding disorder, does he have high blood pressure and is he on any medication that might either increase the risk of bleeding or cause it to continue. Examples might be steroids, warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel.
If there is an underlying cause it would need found and treated or managed. If there is no apparent cause and any drugs he is on are important to his health, he may need the bleeding point in his nose cauterised by an ENT surgeon. To get all these things sorted out he needs to see his GP.

Does 'always' mean this has been going on for years? If not, has he had a CBC and basic blood tests done recently? Could be a clotting problem. Does he take drugs to thin his blood such as are sometimes taken for various circulatory problems? Could be a side effect. Even aspirin can affect some people this way if taken frequently. Ask a doctor. Good luck!

If he hasn't already he should see a Dr. and have his blood pressure checked. It may be too high. That would cause it.Also if he's on a blood thinner like Cumadin, maybe he needs the dosage lowered.
