Reinstating the draft to send the children of those who avoided combat is abhorrant.
This is almost like sending children to prison because their father commited murder.
There are arguments why we should not have the draft back.
First of all, it is a form of slavery. You are forcing people to do work even if they do not want to do it. It does not matter what compensation you give them. If you force innocent people to do something they do not want to do then you are forcing people into slavery.
Next up is that it would not be helpful to the military. The military is composed of volunteer soldiers at the moment. These people wanted to join the military (or at least thought it was a good idea at one time). The backbone of the military is discipline. Imagine training hundreds of thousands of people who do not want to be there. That will kill discipline. We would end up with a less disciplined military. This is the same type that we had in Vietnam. They tried their best, but they were just not the right people to send into combat. Think about it. Over half the people in the US think that the war is a bad idea.
Also, you are trading quality of the soldier with quantity of the soldier. The draftees would not be trained for years and then sent to combat. They would get a crash course training and then shipped off as soon as possible. If you did any less then you would have even more discipline and moral problems. When these soldiers get into combat, they will not have the same training as our current military. The body count would really go up.
The purpose of a draft is to only throw bodies into the conflict. It is not the best use of resources.

You are wrong. How is sending only one group of people ( the wealthy, whoever that is) into battle fair? You must have a warped sense of fairness, probably wrapped up in some sense of "cosmic justice." The same kind of "cosmic justice" that Marx and Lenin believed in; to bad their theory lead to over 100 million dead in the name of fairness.
I would be for mandatory military training for every man from 18-19, but as far as active duty service goes, I think it should be only voluntary. That way it is fair, because if you are on active duty, you chose to be there. These people who think we cannot maintain a quality military on a volunteer basis know nothing of economics. You will get quality people if you agree to pay enough. Imagine if you paid 50,000 per year for even the lowliest private. You would see lots of volunteers! Just keep raising the pay level until enough people sign up. This is simple economics.

The draft will be re-implemented and its a good idea.
That way, noone can get out of going, including those that think they deserve to sit at home while others are risking their lives.
The draft is a great idea and it is my belief that EVERY immigrant that comes to the USA agrees to serve a minimum of 4 yrs in the military, and that they will also learn English while they are there so they will understand and comply with all commands given to them.
Secondly, noone can go to college until they have served in the US military 4 years.
Thirdly, anyone with a criminal record is automatically sent to the front line and given a weapon and told to fight or be executed.
Fourth, if you consider yourself a consciencious objector, then you will serve 6 yrs in the Peace Corp and be sent to the rice fields of Korea, the deserts of Africa, or the jungles of the equator. No softa$$ jobs for anyone.
Fifth, if you dont like America: LEAVE and this is the time to do it.

There is no way this country is going to maintain the lifestyle we have grown accustomed to with a all volunteer military. We're too big and our interests are to expansive.
No different than much smaller countries like Germany, there is nothing wrong with young americans having to devote 2-3 years to some sort of military service or police service to their nation.
If the war on terror is as important to the nation as the DECIDER says it is then we really have no choice but to call up a draft, just like any other war of epic prpportions, of course unless he is lieing all bets are off.

I've been saying this for years. Also, my belief is: if parents are not willing to offer their sons and daughters to a fair draft, then the war the war in question should be voted down. Each citizen must have a steak in the losses, not just the very patriotic or unfortunate. I know - I was in Vietnam which changed my mind about blind trust.

Since I was around then, and I am a vet, I would like to remind the questioner that the LIBERAL DEMOCRATS killed the draft in the first place.
I joined the Navy at 17......my suspicion is that this guy is not a vet.

why should we? we have over 2 million people in the military. go ask some higher-ups in the military-- they'll tell you no, there's no need, and would serve no purpose.
tell that idiot rengel from NYC to shut up about a draft. maybe you should know that the idiot who introduced the idea in 2004 also voted AGAINST HIS OWN BILL when it was time.

I say lets clean out our prisons first use these people who are there for most of their life and give them a chance to redeem themselves before sending anyone else

I don't think we should bring back the draft unless we absolutely have to, I think we have plenty of volunteers that will willingly sign up.

Absolutely! Draft our sports "heroes" first, then every one who drives a Hummer over here can start driving one over there.
