One of our neighbors has 2 small, yappy dogs who literally barked from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. yesterday. (Yep, they were left ALONE that long). I was home most of the day, and was amazed at how many times, each hour, they went on barking jags. Every little thing would set them off: a squirrel, a bird, someone walking past the yard, a car driving past, a garage door opening, an airplane, you get the picture! ARRGH!!!!

What I'd like to know is: do dogs EVER get tired of hearing themselves bark? I know dogs' vocal chords are designed to make a lot more noise, and louder noise, than human vocal chords. But it seems even dogs should get hoarse or sore throats EVENTUALLY. Plus, it would also seem like eventually the dogs would get bored with all that barking, and just give up!

Awcathome, you have an excellent point. :) I wish the neighbors agreed. Unfortunately, these 2 dogs are CHRONICALLY neglected. They frequently do this same routine of barking all day and into the night. :( Sometimes on weekdays; sometimes on weekends; but overall it happens more than half the days each week! I feel angry and sad when people get dogs, and then neglect them to the point that the dogs become depressed, anxious and/or neurotic. :(

Far Side has a funny cartoon depicting a dog giving a class to other dogs while standing in front of a chalkboard with a diagram of a doorknob. He tells the class, " if we can figure this out we can rule the world" However, our dear pets don't have that ability they see the world and us completely different. I tend to believe the alpha dog and pack theory. Dogs protect the den while the alpha dog or dogs (that is us) go on the hunt. They wait for us to come back with spoils.

Suggest to you neighbors if you can the situation but have a solution. Usually services for pet babysitting or walking are available. The poor dogs are bored and lonely and probably scared guarding the den for 12 hours at a time. Someone needs to help your neighbors out. Maybe they are not aware of the situation. If you try this, do it out of concern for the dogs not from frustration. Otherwise you can just ignore it or learn to live with it.

Excessive barking is a sign of excessive energy. Thats the only way the dog can get the energy out. I work a lot with rescued dogs and had a pit bull that had enough energy to keep her going at least a week without sleeping. She would bark and bark and bark in her pen at everything and nothing at all. Just sit and look at the house and bark.
BUT after I ran her for 2 hours she was quite as a mouse. Barking is the only way the neighbors dogs know how to realize their energy. And you think, well, they have a yard. Well sure, but the dog's mind they have to move forward, go somewhere. A yard is like a giant kennel.
Tell your neighbors to get a dog walker because their dogs don't get enough exercise.

They were only protecting their home. It is natural for a dog to do that. It might bother the neighbors sure. But sometimes it is best to let dogs have their way. Several years ago on the news their was a family who got tired of their dog's barking and someone went out a whipped them. The dog's ran under their porch and stayed there after that. The next morning the whole family was found killed by the people or person that the dog's were barking at. I hope you understand that and hope the dog's can learn what is meant as danger and what is not. But to me being safe is alot more important then making a dog quit protecting it's home.

If you pass the SPCA buildings, unless they're new and sound proofed, you can hear dogs barking for blocks. Dogs bark for various reasons: They're territorial and bark to warn their masters, they're neglected and want companionship, they're hungry and need food, they want attention, they want to play, they're excited... and the list goes on. Some dogs NEVER bark. Some breeds of dog NEVER shut up. Even if they're hoarse or have a sore throat, their breeding will help decide how noisy they are. So, before buying a certain breed, do your homework and then decide which noise level you can stand, bearing in mind if the dog you buy is bored, excited, etc., you're gonna HEAR about it... Good luck! Wisdom Speaks!

Dogs have normal and abnormal barking behaviors. Normal is to alert and show danger, also to discover other dogs where-abouts and to show excitement and play. But on and on barking with no master in sight is a definite indication of bad barking. It goes directly to there need for an alpha (dog). They are basically in a bad way and you should consider this type of barking as neglect. I suggets you file a complaint with 911 each and everytime the barking goes on for more that 5 minutes, leave a note with your strong cencerns on the neighbors door and insist they find a way to stop the barking. Do let up with the 911 complaints or the notifications until its resolved.

I have a Carian Terrior Poodle mix and she is 7 and when I would leave for work in the morning she was home alone. So she barked and barked. My land lord complained about her. And when I would get home from work her voice was all coarse like she had a soar throat. So dogs I guess to get tired from barking. Also she was tired usually she would ran by me whineing and jumping but she walked real slow. I got a puppy which solved her lonleyness. But they do get tired i guess.

Yes, dogs get tired of barking, but these two won't.
They are tired, bored, neglected. They have nothing to do but bark.

I'd start with a call to the local animal protection group. Maybe the ASPCA?

Try the local no kill shelter.........

These dogs need someone to be their voice... as they are crying out for help.

They need a home where they will be loved and given attention.

Good luck.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/kZnns

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Call the Humane Society in your area. They will tell you what can be done as far as civil action or local ordinances.

This is inhumane to allow it to continue. The dogs are neglected and a nuisance to the neighborhood.

Well, Dogs has the stamina to bark that long.

But what a pity that they are left neglected that long....

Is it very disturbing to you? if it is, you can actually do somthing about it, though it might hurt your relationship with your neighbour, but I guess if it is really a nuisance to you, you should talk to your neighbour about it.

This is for the better of everyone, you, the dog and your neighbour

Cheers
