I've been thinking about your plight for some time now and I just can't seem to find a simple answer for you. You say that your from a patriotic family and that you respect the troops so I have to assume that you love this country as much as you love your family and friends and this is why your having such a tough time dealing with the present situation in Iraq and Afghanistan. If this isn't the way you feel then you might as well ignor the rest of what I have to say because I've totally misread your question.
I spent a lot of years in the military on severial different continates during three different hostilities. In all that time I never met a soldier that was there for him or herself. They were there because they believed in something more important to them than their lives and those of their famlies and friends. They believed in a system of government, as set fourth by the Consatitution, that would allow the greastest amount of freedom for the greatest number of people this world has ever known. They knew that this system was not without its flaws but they had faith. They had faith in the American People, they believed that when push came to shove the American People would set aside all thier petty differances and do what was right for the country. There's no question that there are people in this world, even within the borders of our country who absolutly reject the principles upon which this nation was founded. They think women are chattle, that the color of your skin or your religion should determine a mans worth, and the list goes on and on. There are those in this country that think that we have gone to war for all the wrong reasons, or perhapes they don't believe in war at all for any reason. They are intitled to their opinion and I and the tens of thousands like me would defend their right to hold these beliefs and to voice them as loudly as they please. Not because we agree with them but becasue we believe in the free expression of thought, the right to stand out on the street corner and shout to the world, "I object". So your going to have to examine your own 'soul' and decide for yourself what outrages you the most and what your are willing to do about it. May God grant you the serinity to accept the things you can not change, the courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the differance and may she ever smile upon you.

Here's what you need to remember. Not wanting to go to war, or realizing that we were scammed into invading Iraq is not un-American. The un-American garbage is talk radio's way to get people to believe what they want you to believe.
Let's say GW decides tomorrow to invade some little country that did absolutely nothing. If we were to question him or his motives would we still be un-American? Of course not, we would be standing up for what is right.
You can honor the troops and not support the war. The two are not related. My brother is in Iraq right now. There is nothing I wish for more than his safe return home. But, I also oppose the fact that he is there. When he was in Afghanistan, I did not have the same issues. There was a reason to be there.

You need to follow your heart on this one. No one likes killing and war, but it will always be with us no matter what anti-war people think. I volunteered for the army when Vietnam was going on, and I did my duty. That doesn't mean that I am braver or more special than anyone else, it just means I did what I thought was right. Looking back I realize that Vietnam was a mess just like Iraq is. The other thing is that we are not getting both sides of the story. As for not knowing what to think, I will repeat what I said in the beginning. In your heart you know what's right. The fact that you are thinking about this issue shows that you are excercising your God given right as an American. Keep it up, and God bless

I dont see it that way. I see it as a soldier who joins to support his country and protect it. Yes when he signs the dotted line his main boss is the president and the soldier has to follow his orders until he resigns out of the army. Not everyone is going to agree with the president and that is their right however you must stand up for your beliefs and you can accept their beliefs and each should respect each others feelings and thoughts on the matter. Dont let them persuade you otherwise. Everyone wants someone else to feel the same as them and they want you to feel bad, but you dont have to.

There is no reason to completely change your outlook on life because of one person's opinion. The troops who are fighting are there to protect our values, as well as our right to criticize our government. It takes a strong person to stand up to that, but a part of the oath of enlistment in to the military is to support and uphold the orders of those appointed above you, regardless of how you feel about them personally. It is not cowardness to fight as a solidier, but rather takes a certain courage in the face of adversity. It sounds as though the people with whom you spoke do not have any sense of honor or duty to their oaths. Even when you do not agree with policy, please continue to support our troops, as they do not have a choice, but rather a strong sense of this honor and duty. They are worth your support.

These people do not understand Army moral code. I wonder what major role our Army has not killed people? Do they want them to hand out flowers? It is their duty to answer to the higher command. Which in the end is us. Pres. Generals. The war is not an illegal war. They are not told to do illegal things in Iraq. Their job is to do as their commander and chief tells them. They are not cowards. They are brave soldiers duing their job.

First, you were brainwashed by your family and traught not to think independently, Now it appears you are being brainwashed by left wing wackos to not think independently and hate your country.
You need to go to a library and start doing your own indepedent research on U.S. foreign policy and educate yourself so that you can think for yourself.
