When I was grooming in with a Vet he had me mix up some stuff to use. It heals ear infections and eliminates ear mites and is a good over all ear cleaner.

Mix in equal parts: Apple Cider Vinegar (healing agent)
70% rubbing alcohol (drying agent)
Water (a dilution)

Fill ear canal and massage at the base of the ear, you will hear the swish swash as you massage if you are in the right area. The massage loosens goop and when the dog shakes his head and empties the canal go back in with a cotton ball and clean what you can see. DO NOT allow dog to shake head until you have done the massage. Repeat with the other ear.

I used that solution on all dogs I groomed cause it is so effective.

There is a cleaning solution available for cleaning dogs ears available at any pet store or pet supply store. use a Thin wash cloth and clean away. Dont use Q-tips and dont use regular soap and water. You dont want soap or dog shampoo getting into the ear canal.

Drs. Foster and Smith have some wonderful products to clean dogs ears with. They have Pet Otic Ear Cleaner for 8.99 and their Ear Cleanse Pads which is what i use on all of my dogs. It works really well and all you have to do is take one of the pads out of the container and wipe the inside of their ears. It helps clean out the dirt and those pesky ear mites. Hope this helps.

Oticleanse, R-7, etc., there are several to choose from. It would be better to know what breed in order to recommend something more specific. With long eared dogs, particularly cockers please stay away from adding oils. Also you can look up Blue Power Treatment which is good to use every so often before a bath just to reduce any fungus that could cause an infection

I actually use baby diaper wipes to clean out the ears of the dogs around here if needed.

Take them to a vet. That is the safest way they can also teach how to do it properly and safely. You can also purchase ear cleaner at your local pet store. Do not use water because if you dont get all of it out it can cause infection make sure you purchase a self drying animal safe ear cleaner.
