I worked for NAAFI for 4 years with the British forces in Germany. I noticed I was not paying any tax or National insurance and thought "Goody". After we got back home and I began working for a British firm, I get a letter from the powers that be to say that if I want a pension when I'm 60, I owe them....whatever it was. Panic. If you think you are getting away with something, investigate. Chances are it's just getting ready to bite you in the ****.

First off your tax code tells you how much you can earn tax free .
ex, tax code 529 would allow you £5290 approx then approx one third of whats left goes to the tax man

This all depends on your individual circumstances - single, married, any benefits or allowances etc - different circumstances attract different rates of tax. Contact your nearest tax office, jobcentre or Citizens Advice Bureau. They will all have useful information for you.
