my friends dad is selling his 1979 Blazer. It has a 6'' lift on 35inch tires, and its in pretty good shape, I am just looking for somethign that can haul my quad, and also so I can do a little off roading (nothing too serious, just romping and stuff)

But here are my questions..

First, when I was checking it out, I noticed that the part where the air filter sits on top of the carb (right?) isnt there, its just the carb, it ran fine, but should I hit up a junkyard to get that part or leave it?

Secondly, how long do tires usually last? They are 35inch BG All
Terains or something, they are less than a month old, will these last me a while cause I know tires like that are prettty pricey...?

Lastly, how does the 4wd work? He said something about locking the front tires before switching it over to 4wd?

you realize that Blazer is almost 30 years old.
There are going to be a lot of ongoing repairs, it is really just worn out junk on wheels.

You have to have a functioning air filter, if you go offroad and there is dust, it will ruin your engine cylinders.

Are 35 inch tires, legal for street driving?

4 wheel drive has Hubs at each wheel that have to be turn to "on " position for 4 wheel drive, and then there is transfer case in cab (like gear shift) Truck can be run with hubs in "ON" position all the time with transfer case in 2WD mode, but milage suffers.
A lot of people drive for years with hubs in "off" position and don't use 4 wheel drive, This lack of use damages the wheel hub mechanism.

Don't buy this vehicle before you get it gone through really good by a mechanic...(Will cost about $100)

DON'T BUY IT if he ran it very long without the air filter and I'm sure he did you can bet there is some dust and dirt sucked into the carb and motor, And he is old enough to know better not to run it without the air filter. The tires are not cheap, and as far as gas mileage forget it. It is not going to be the case of how many miles per gallon it is more like how many gallons per mile, And as for hauling your quad around forget that to you would be better off with a pick-up truck and make sure it has a air filter.

Good luck

The filter that keps dust and dirt out should be replaced to keep dirt out of your motor that will cause it to wear faster.

If the tires are kept right they will get about 30-40000 miles. Over inflation that is common on these and fast cornering speed up the process.

The locks on the hubs engage the tires to the drive axles in your front axle. Both need to be either locked or unlocked. The shifter in the floor either engages the front axle or high low range. If it has a 203 with a part-time kit then from front to rear is
4 low
2 low
neutral
2 high
4 high
The 203 is the most common case under that truck. Look under it if it is steel then this is the one you have. If aluninium then it is a np208 and I am not sure about that shift pattern. Go to www.coloradok5.com to learn all you want about these trucks.
