it depends on how broadly you're using the word 'playable' since you cannot play ANY copied games on a ps2 that doesn't have a modchip inside it.

software alone cannot create an exact copy of a legit ps2 game disc that will work on an unchipped ps2, there is always information missing from backup copies and this is why a modchip is needed - it provides that information to the ps2.

for chipped ps2s, there are dozens and dozens of tutorials for creating backups of your games using your own words:

Just so you know, it is ILLEGAL to be doing this, even if they're just for your own "back ups". But since I don't particularly care if you get your retarded *** thrown in jail, I'll help you out.

You'll need either a modchip or a bootloader disk.

The first is a more permanent and useful solution, whereas the second requires very little electronics knowledge (such as soldering) and doesn't void your warranty on the PS2. Swap Magic is the preferred swap disk bootloader.

It is NOT possible without one of these two extra pieces of hardware.

After you have one of those, you can just make a 1-to-1 copy of the DVD. If you need to make it smaller to fit on a DVD-R, be sure to put everything back on in the right order (search for guides to do this) or it will fail to load.
