i do cheerleading and i lift girls a lot and i heard that if you arch your back you can hurt your spine/lower back. If i had injured it, would i feel it hurting bad, outside of cheerleading practices?

As a past HS and college cheerleader, and current coach, I felt compelled to answer this question.

Strength training is best. Our girls train with weights. Your goal is to make your core strong. Pilates can help you with that.

YOUR BACK SHOULD NEVER HURT AS A RESULT OF LIFTING. If it does, you are not using the correct stance to lift your flyers.

Position your feet so that they are planted firmly on the floor with your knees about even with your shoulders. Slightly bend your knees while keeping your back straight. Imagine that you have a brace keeping your vertebrae in alignment. Your back should not be arched or concave.

If you continue to have back pain, you might want to go to your doctor for xrays just to be on the safe side.

Good Luck to you!

If you injured your back, you would definitely feel it. It is good that you are concerned about keeping your back healthy, once you injure your back you can end up with an injury that will impact you in your everyday life, not just in cheerleading. It is important to always lift using the correct technique to protect your back. I would also do other exercises to strengthen other muscles(like your abs) to help support your back when lifting. Pilates is great for this. Most importantly, if something hurts-STOP! and have your trainer check you out. Good luck!
