I am looking into getting another dog. I have a 8yr old shepard mix and love him. I also have a 4yr and a 2yr old children at home. I would like to get a chocolate lab but everyone says that they are to hyper? I understand that all puppies are work but should I just stay away from this breed? Is there any websites that match your personality to a certain breed of dog?

That is rediculus I have owned and bred labs for 15 years labs are not hyper. American or field dogs are higher energy but not hyper. Engish or Conformation labs are less energetic but are sill
labs. I specialize in conformation style CHOCOLATE labs if anyone knows these dogs I do. My grandchildren were raised from birth around labs. There are no better dog to have for children than labs. Thats why labs are the #1 dog in the USA. Chocolates are just another color like yellow and black. There is no truth in the myth that chocolates are different. You can have a litter with all three colors in it. If you want to see my babies go to burdicklabradors.com I recommend you go to AKC.org under the breeders classifieds if you want to find a petigreee lab. If you want an older dog try breed resue. next day pets has a great breed rescue section.

Working with a shelter or rescue group can help you a lot. Searching by your zip code on www.petfinder.com will bring you a lot of results. Look at the rescue groups there and download their applications. You'll get a better idea of the kinds of questions they'll ask before they adopt out their dogs. The great thing about rescue groups is that they've had the time to see how a puppy or dog is in a normal household atmosphere, and if the dog has behavior issues, they'd know about it. Same with some shelters - and it's great to adopt from a shelter, but many of these don't have time to spend with the dog the way rescue groups do. Be sure to ask a lot of questions! The fact that you're dog-experienced is a huge plus. Good luck!

No, No, No, you should deffinitly get a labrador. Every-body is just jealous that they dont have one!!! l0l

But I am serious a labrador is they perfect dog for children. They can tolerate so much from children. But they are rite a lil bit, they can be a little bit hyper.... but it mostly depends on how ou raise them. Like I told someone else, the are really, happy and healthy compainions.

No you shouldnt stay from this breed... to me it is the perfect breed!! I used to have 3 blacks, 1 chocolate, and 2 yellow. They were all rescued. One black, chocolate, and two yellow were about to be killed at my neighboors, but I saved them just in time.
Then over the years, I collected more labs because I just couldnt get enough of them. Rite now 30 years later, I have only one Black lab left, but I also have a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Shi-poo!

Sorry to go off subject...........

Also no, there isnt a website that can match a dog to an owner's lifestyle that I know of, but a labrador is like the best breed!

Whatever type of dog breed that you get (perferrably a lab....) I hope that you and your kids have a happy, healthy, and nice life with that dog!!!

Lab puppies are a lot of fun but a LOT of work. They start really cute and cuddly but get really big really fast and they have so much energy it is unbelievable. They need constant attention and will chew like you wouldn't believe. My neighbor's lab pup actually chewed her way out of a metal crate and ate every picture frame in the house as well as shredding an area rug. My lab used to chew the corners of walls.

I love labs, but I think with an older dog and very young children it's not the best choice for you unless you adopt one that is a bit older and past the puppy stage.

Have you tried your local shelter? They will usually let you interact with the dogs to see how well they mesh with your kids and existing pets, that way you can be confident that you got the right dog for your family.

Chocolate Labs are very active, high strung, STRONG, and would not make a good pet for the kids.

Why don't you and the kids take a trip to the Humane Society or the local pound or a rescue group and talk to the people there, they can direct you to a dog that would meet your needs.

If you still want the Lab get it when the kids are older.

My best advice is to go to your local pound with your family and spend some "getting to know" time with the shelter animals. Also, the shelter should know if the dog is hyper or not. Our local shelter has a lot of information about a dog if it was turned in by the owner.

If you wont a chocolate lab you should get one, they will be perfect for your children, yes they are hyper, but the have a good rep. of being protective of your family, and they are also easy for teaching tricks.

I don't know I've never owned a chocolate lab. You could call your local AKC and ask them.
