Hiccups (or hiccoughs to give them their correct name!) occur when the diaphragm goes into spasm. Spicy foods cause pressure on the diaphragm and can "help" it to go into spasm.

The spices are causing your diaphragm to spazz out. I have a really good way of stopping hiccups. I learned this by accident while working as a radio DJ. Just pick up anything and read it out loud, very dramatically. VERY, very dramatically. Go for at least 3 minutes. It blows your diaphragm in and out and works out the spasm.

Because the spices irritate the diaphragm and is contracts in a spasm. The Diaphragm separates the stomach from the chest and the oesophagus
