The Marriott Marquis is in the Theatre District in Times Square on Broadway and 45th Street; it is NOT on the Upper West Side. Look for your restaurants on Eighth Avenue and Ninth Avenue - the restaurants on Broadway and Seventh Avenue tend to be tourist traps. New Yorkers frequent the Ninth Avenue restaurants. (What's wrong with the "tourist traps"? They know you're not coming back, so they feel free to serve overpriced medicore food.).

Del Valle on Tenth Avenue and 48th Street is my favorite Mexican restaurant (which is extremely inexpensive - their customers live and work in the area) - not Tex Mex - it's authentic Mexican cooking from Puebla (near Mexico City). They have wonderful seafood dishes - about a half dozen different shrimp dishes - my favorite is garlic shrimp - a very generous portion comes with rice and beans or salad and fresh, hot tortillas = that's $11. The most expensive item on the menu is seafood soup - with shrimp, mussels, clams, fish, and crab. Also comes with tortillas and rice and beans (your choice of red or black) = $14.

For a fast meal - Island Burgers and Shakes on Ninth Avenue and 51st Street - very small place. Serves salads, guacamole, but mostly they have burgers and chicken breast sandwiches on a variety of breads with a variety of unusual toppings - really good burgers and chicken. Good shakes, too. (average price for a burger or chicken sandwich is $6 to $7)

If you like Spanish food (from Spain, not Mexico - it's an entirely different cuisine), Costa del Sol on 50th Street and Ninth Avenue is wonderful - for $25, you get a complete dinner with a ton of choices - AND IT's GOOD! You get a choice of soup or salad - (I never order salad when there's another choice, so I can't comment). My favorite soup is the Caldo Gallego - from Galecia Spain - a delicious hearty soup with bacon, chorizo sausage, white beans, kale and other vegetables; you can also order the cold gazpacho or a chicken soup with noodles. You have a choice of more than twenty entrees - at least six different shrimp dishes - my favorites are the very lightly floured shrimp with wine sauce and the garlic shrimp - HUGE portions. You can also order salmon, paella, a whole lobster with butter sauce, various chicken dishes, mixed seafoods, veal., pork chops. These come with saffron rice and string beans - large platters on the table for everyone. You also get dessert and coffee - the cheesecake is good, but you can have flan or rice pudding or icecream. As if all this food weren't enough of a bargain, if two of you order this three course dinner, you can get a bottle of red or white wine for only $6 more ($3 each)

Go up to the View or the Lounge in the Marriott - I'm not suggesting that you eat there - it's overpriced and not that good - but, go up there and look out the windows - the restaurant rotates so you get a view of all angles. If you're interested in that view, eat the buffet at the Lounge or just get drinks. The buffet isn't outstanding, but it's much cheaper than the restaurant and the seats are comfortable.

Buy a copy of the magazine TimeOut New York - it will give you addresses and tell you everything that's happening in New York that week - theatre, movies, concerts, designer sales, museum exhibits.

Have a great time.

Well, for starters, the Marriott Marquis IS in Times Square and is NOT near the West 70's (more like the West 40's). Its a nice hotel and is near plenty of restaurants. There is a Red Lobster near by that I like to go to and an Olive Garden (these are more for your ordinary chain restaurants). Also, though the selections that the answerer above me gave are great. So, now that you know where the hotel is you should try to see what you can find around that area.

I work for Wyndham Worldwide, which owns 8 other hotel brands and I can tell ya hotels there aren't cheap at all. So book in advance and the cheapest way to do it is usually online when they have 'Buy Now Rates' The only problem with those is your card is automatically charged and there is no refund so you have to be 100% positive about your trip. I recommend the Ramada Plaza New Yorker. Good hotel . Good location.

Its at West 45th Street. So of the millions of restaurants ( I do tend to exaggerate a little bit sometimes) can be found at the site you mentioned under area info: restaurants, all. see source below.

It's the upper west side, nice neighborhood, should be plenty of good restaurants in the area. Enter the address into Yahoo maps and you can display restaurants nearby.
