The army will be only as good as you are. The US Army kicks a%#. So sign up you man. I did and it was the best experience of my life. Dying is a fact of life. In this current war your are more likely to be killed in an accident than in battle. Just get assigned to a combat arms unit and you'll do OK.

I'm an 8 year veteran of the Army. I was an active duty infantryman in the 82nd Airborne and reclassified into Civil Affairs where I did a tour in Iraq with USACAPOC. The Army taught me a strong work ethic and gave me a lot of opportunity that I'm very thankful for. Most Americans will never serve in the military, escpecially during wartime. It is something to be proud of. That being said, the military is a tough life. You are away from home a lot and your spouse has to be pretty tough if your marraige is going to last. You have to accept that the family you will be spending the most time with for the next 20 years (if you are a lifer) is your military family. I love the military and I would definitely do it all again, but I chose to get out because I wanted to focus on my family life.

The army (or any branch of the military), is only as hard as you make it. First you take a test, then a physical. You will then have 8 weeks of basic training, then 6 weeks of AIT (Advance Individual Training), then sent to a unit. Being in the military is not a bad choice. Many people say that joining during war time is not the smartest thing to do, but consider this.... any time you join, whether war time or peacetime, you are signing an oath to protect the USA from all enemies foreign or domestic. So, even if you join in peacetime, war can happen and you will have to go. If you are just going to sign up for college, forget it, do something else. If you join you are joining one of the best in the world. Where else can you get a job, housing, medical, uniforms, food and bonuses, plus can't get downsized or fired (unless you truly screw up). In this day and age we need our troops to protect us. Good luck to you and I hope you make the right choice.

i would recommend joining and I'll tell you why... you can't beat the benefits, training, and experiences that you will get. There are some bad things like working long hours, being deployed to war, and even being away from home. The time flies by so fast that it is over and you are thinking back wishing you were still in. Don't concentrate on dying it is not likely but it is possible. If you dwell on it it will drive you mad. If you think about the good and the bad the good out weighs the bad. Go for it! Good luck.

The 'ups' are everything everyone else has said so far: food, clothes, health care, pay, training, travel. Those are material things and you can get them in many other jobs. I've been in the army for 10 years and my 'ups' are the pride and honor I've had in serving my country, and the friends I've met during my career. I met my spouse in my second year of service.
The biggest 'downs' are obvious, but worth mentioning again. Time away from family and home is a really big one. I've lost friends and have friends who are severely disabled. I've been cursed at, spat on, shot at, bled on, and blown up. Going into this 10th year my husband was killed overseas. Never think that it can't be you or your best friend. Surviving is hard.
Army recruiting isn't going away so you have lots of time to decide if you are ready. Good Luck.

Any form of the military is going to have pros and cons. You have to consider what you are looking for in your life. All forms of the military build character, pride and purpose. But you have to consider if this is "short term" or if you are looking to make a career of it. Talk to someone you know that has been in the Army. You are going to get all kinds of off the wall comments on Y!A.
