I skied for 6 hours yesterday on the hard slopes, and I don't feel like I got a workout at all. Do you still get a workout while skiing, even if you spend half the time on lifts?

Skiing burns calories.

Yeah, the calorie burn is reduced on the way up but just because the speed on the way down is primarily fueled by gravity does not mean its free speed.

Once you want to do something other than schuss the hill you must start bending your skis and making sure your edges are gripping the hill. That takes a fair amount of muscle power.

Of course, if you ski in bumps & crud that adds even more need to work muscles.

Also, if you have to pole, herringbone, or skate the lifts that adds even more work.

The fact you were not feeling the burn or sore is probably more indicative of you being in good ski shape than anything else. In shape people burn less calories than those out of shape but certainly your metabolism was raised.

Gloria,

Skiing does use up a great deal of calories. If I was to just estimate your weight at 135 pounds, and had you skiing dowhill a total of 1 hour out of the 6 that you were skiing you have burned up 389 calories.

If you want to figure out this yourself go to http://www.squidoo.com/weightloss-dieting-fitness/ and then you scroll down until you see "calorie calculator" you can put your weight and time spent, you can figure out how many calories you would burn for each activity. It would then give you a closer number than what I have listed above.

The reason that I only put in 1 hour is that I don't know how much time you actually skii'd compared to riding the lift, having lunch, waiting in line etc.

Once you add in the amount of energy you expended doing a little cross country, and just plain walking around in the snow you have definately burned up a great deal of calories, as downhill skiing burns up less calories that other snow activities. Many people skiing find that they can lose 1 pound each day that they skii.

If you don't feel you've had a workout, you must have been on the ski lifts for 6 hours!!

Coming down the slope doesn't consume much energy and going up in lift doesn't consume much energy. And may be you are in very good condition and so did not feel any strain. Try to walk up the slope.
